..........The Republic Institute for Protection of Cultural, Historical and Natural Heritage was founded in 1976, as a regional institution, and it was transformed into republic institution in 1995, after the Dayton Agreement was introduced. The Institute covers the entire territory of the Republic of Srpska, and it is an institution of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Srpska.

- Registration of heritage
- Gathering of the documentation regarding heritage
- Evaluation of cultural and natural values
- Compilation of propositions for proclamation of cultural monuments
2..Protection of cultural and natural heritage:
- Compilation of designs, project analyses and studies for purposes of protection of cultural and natural values;
- Implementation of archaeological field works
- Implementation of conservation and restoration works
- Support to the spatial development planning
- Expert support and monitoring of implementation of works on cultural, historical and natural monuments
- Compilation of decrees on technical protection measures and approvals for designs regarding preservation and revitalization of monuments
3..Other activities:
- Issuing export permissions for works of art
- Participation in information exchange between all relevant institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Europe
- Promoting heritage, as well as science and science ethics in all fields relevant for research and protection of heritage

..........The Institute has a permanent task to register, protect and keep the central register of cultural, historical and natural monuments. The experts from the Institute keep doing field work, where they research and evaluate the immovable heritage of all types, archaeological places, vernacular architecture, valuable cemeteries, public monuments, natural treasures and historical areas.
..........The Institute also performs research and promotion of cultural, historical and natural heritage of the Republic of Srpska, which is an integral part of the European heritage.
..........The Institute has 22 employees. 14 of them are situated in Banjaluka, 4 of them in the department of Trebinje and 4 of them in the department of Pale. The professions of the employees cover all the necessary activities in cultural and natural heritage protection: archaeology, architecture, biology, ethnology, history of art, conservation, painting, legal issues etc.
..........The activities are mainly financed from the Republic of Srpska budget, as well as by donations and independent contracts.
..........The Institute permanently collaborates with the relevant institutions in the field of heritage protection, primarily with the Institute for Protection of Monuments of the Republic of Serbia, Institute for Nature Protection of the Republic of Serbia, Museum of the Republic of Srpska, Museum of Contemporary art, University of Banjaluka, etc.
